WordPress security alternatives, compared

There are three kinds of WordPress security tool: plugins that run inside WordPress, firewalls that sit in front of it, and agents that check it from the server. This page compares seven options across those kinds, says what each one leaves out, and links to a full comparison with SiftWP for each.

We make SiftWP, so read this with that in mind. Details about other products come from their own public pages, last checked October 11, 2026. Plans and prices change, so confirm them on each vendor's site.

Choose by the job you need done

  • Block attacks before they land. A firewall. Wordfence runs one inside WordPress, and Sucuri runs one in front of your site as a DNS proxy. SiftWP has none.
  • Patch a known plugin flaw before you can update. Patchstack, and Solid Security Pro through Patchstack.
  • Harden logins. Solid Security and Wordfence offer two-factor authentication and brute-force protection.
  • Find and fix what is already on the site. This is where a scanner matters. MalCare gives you a cleanup button, Sucuri has a cleanup team, and SiftWP investigates findings from the server and fixes the safe ones.
  • Manage many client sites. WP Umbrella covers backups, updates, uptime and reports. Security is one part of it.

Using more than one

Most sites end up with two layers, for example a firewall plus a weekly scan. SiftWP installs nothing in WordPress, so it does not conflict with a plugin or a DNS firewall. Avoid running two plugins that both scan files at the same time.

Questions

Questions about choosing

Do I need a WordPress security plugin at all?
Some active security layer is worth having on any WordPress site. The real question is which model fits how you manage it. A plugin, a DNS firewall and an SSH-based scan agent each cover a different part of the problem.
Can I use more than one of these together?
Yes. They work at different layers. A DNS firewall filters traffic before it reaches your server, a plugin watches WordPress from the inside, and SiftWP checks files and the database from the server over SSH. Running two plugins that both scan files can slow a site, so check each one's guidance.
Can I switch to SiftWP without downtime?
Yes. SiftWP installs nothing in WordPress, so you can import an SSH key and run a first scan without removing your current tool. Many sites run both for a few scan cycles and compare findings before deciding what to keep.
Which options are free?
Wordfence has a free plan and Solid Security has a free Basic version. SiftWP gives 100 free credits to start. Patchstack and WP Umbrella are paid, with trials or limited free tiers, so check their current offers.
So what is the single best WordPress security tool?
No single tool wins on every point. Wordfence and Sucuri are common picks for a real-time firewall. Patchstack specializes in virtual patching of known plugin flaws. WP Umbrella suits agencies that want security inside a wider site-management dashboard. Solid Security hardens logins. SiftWP fits best if you want no extra plugin and an agent that investigates and fixes findings. Which is best depends on which of those jobs you need done.
